A notorious family owned 23 room hotel “The Old St. James”,  where the young bartender died on the job, was moved to the spot were a 25 year old mother and her 6 young children mysteriously died in a horrific fire…the worst in Wayne County’s long history. The Palmyra Historical Museum
The 23 room museum was originally the St. James Hotel. It was built in 1826.

Bloody Corners
The construction of the Erie Canal brought settlers who'd risked everything to go West, frontier traders, and belligerent bargemen. The public drunkenness and violence was so bad the intersection closest to the museum was called "The Bloody Corners".

The St. James Hotel Was Notorious
The St. James Hotel, a modest hotel built in 1826 to coincide with the opening of the canal, was sold to John Rifenburgh in 1898. He added more rooms on the front of the hotel and a saloon. Larger, newer rooms were in the front. Cheap rooms were back in the 1826 section. Visitors today notice the narrow hallways and staircases in the older section. The saloon was known as a rowdy place. The ghost of a former guest, a young man who hanged himself, has been seen and felt on the second floor.

Last Call
Two generations of the Rifenburgh family ran the Saloon/Hotel. daughter Edith Rifenburgh even rolled cigars. George, who tended bar, passed out one night in the Saloon and died suddenly at the age of 27 of typhoid. Judging by the unexplained activity in the Saloon, he and some of the patrons may have never left. The family continued to try to make the hotel business work, but Prohibition and the Great Depression caused the hotel to close by 1940.

Horrific Fire
There were once 3 wooden houses where the museum now sits. The middle house was rented to Paul and Anna Breeden, who had 6 children. On December 20th 1964, Paul was "coming back" from a business trip when a fire tore through the Breeden household trapping 25 year old Anna and all 6 kids, aged from just under 2 years old to 8 years old. All that was left of the Breeden’s home after the fire was the burned out hearth. With the contents of the house consumed by fire, the fire department decided to fill in the burned out foundation with sand. Anna Breeden and her children are said to haunt the basement of the building. Artifacts are still found in the sand, dirt and ash.

Historic & Haunted Artifacts
The Old St. James Hotel was saved from the wrecking ball when Main Street was revitalized in the 1970s. The building was moved to its current location right on top of the foundation of the Breeden home. It is stacked with artifacts from Palmyra's celebrated and notorious past. Some may have come with their own ghosts! A doctor who doesn’t like women haunts the “Medical Room”. An entity is reported to lurk in the “Merchant Room. And children can be heard laughing around the toys.
