ABOUT THE JOHN PROCTOR HOUSE

The John Proctor House & Tavern
Yes, it's a real place. In 1953 Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible, a play based on the life of the first man, John Proctor, convicted of witchcraft during the Salem Witch Trials. The Crucible is taught in high schools English classes across America. Proctor, an outspoken critic of the the Salem Witch Trials, was 60 when he was accused, convicted and hanged for witchcraft in 1692. His house, where he raised 17 children by three wives over his lifetime, also functioned as the local tavern. (No wonder the Mendez’s hear children laughing and ghosts partying into the night!)

The Historic Family Home
After John’s execution, his son re-built and added to the original house around 1727. The house stayed in the family for generations and then changed hands a couple of times until it was purchased by Bridgewater Mendez when she saw it was for sale on local news in Huntington Beach, CA. Now it’s Barb’s (and her family’s) mission to restore the house to its former glory as both a family home and as a historical meeting/event space (a nod to its Tavern days).

The imposing three-story home is painted black with red doors (a traditional welcome sign to travelers) Sitting on about a half acre of land this historic First Period House is about 3,900 square feet of original colonial era carpentry. Add to that a full length attic and two basements, one of which is from the original structure, prior to John Proctor. Also dating back to the 1600s are the massive hearth in the parlor and several other wood-burning fireplaces. It’s a tall order, but the family is determined to return the property to its original state. The spectral inhabitants seem happy about it too.

Extremely Active
There has been a lot of activity in the house witnessed by family members, visitors and investigators including: women’s voices heard in the kitchen, Catherine Mendez having unexplained nose bleeds and her feet being pulled from under her at the top of the stairs, piano heard downstairs, anomaly photographed in basement, vanilla extract flying out of the kitchen cabinet at Barbara, children's voices, the sound of people in the parlor (former Tavern), jangling of doorknobs where there are no doorknobs (2nd Floor), knocking on walls (2nd Floor).
