ABOUT DIEHL-MARCUS MANOR

The Bank of Salem
Diehl Marcus Manor was originally built in 1811 as a bank, insurance company, and financial offices. It's founders backed the wrong side in the War of 1812––They were rooting for the English––And the bank was rebranded within 10 years as The Bank of Salem. There are at least 3 vaults, including a working vault in the Main Room. There is also a large vault downstairs where the bank kept bullion and cash from Revolutionary War pensioners, veterans of the War of 1812 and the Civil War. This bank lasted 100 years.

Second Floor Science
The Second Floor was rented to the American Association for the Advancement of Science Frances Ward Putnam was the first Director of Peabody Academy of Science. He took over second floor where he wrote, edited, lectured and conducted experiments for 40 years.

Salem Boys Club
When the bank moved to a larger location, the building became home to “The Salem Fraternity “, later affiliated with Boys & Girls Club in 1910. It became a fixture for the next 95 years. It was also affiliated with the Boy Scouts and was formed to help Also Affiliated with Boy Scouts 12-20 year-old underprivileged boys “in need”.

Haven or Hell
For some boys it was a haven, for some it was a snakepit where their parents sent them when they couldn’t control them. Christian Marcus has heard voices in the attic where punishments were meted out.

Nearby Tragedy
The June 24, 1914 Fire that started just south of Gallows Hill at a 40x60 ft wooden barn that was part of an unoccupied colonial estate burned south and east through the town stopping just short of the bank building according to reporting at the time in the Boston Globe. a large swath of the town was displaced, including many children.

Christian Marcus often finds glasses found turned upside down in odd spots, things constantly moved, voices, and "annoying childish haunting". He believes they want their presence to be known.
