ABOUT THE FAINTING GOAT INN

The Fainting Goat Inn
The B&B and surrounding land now owned by Marnie Streit and Bill Gamble, which includes an island and a spring, was once a trading post for the Cayuga and Onondaga Nations going back at least to the 12th Century. It's been a farm, a family home, a railroad inn and rooming house before becoming a B&B. According to rumors it may also have been a bordello and a stop on the Underground Railroad.

The Inn and the Island
The family who owned the land the longest, the Pearsall family, may have helped slaves along the way to Albany on the Underground Railroad. Gilbert Pearsall and his wife Esther Thustin built the house before 1850. Esther's ailing mother Gratia Thustin plus a few servants, moved in with them. Their only child, Luthor B. Pearsall, volunteered on the Union side in the Civil War. Civil War Artifacts have been found by Marnie Streit all over the farm. A man in a Civil War uniform hs also been seen in the parlor.

A House of Disrepute?
Luther B. Pearsall passed away suddenly in 1896 at the age of 57. The Dartmouth educated farmer and saw mill owner was remembered as gregarious and outgoing. Loved by all. After his death and a family squabble over executorship, the mill burned to the ground and Luthor's widow, Lizzie, left for sunny Los Angeles. She sold the house and the spring in 1901 to Cora Bailey and her "Father" Samuel R. Terrell. Not much is known about them but it is supposed that they did not have a healthy relationship. A woman in fear and a murdered man have been felt on the second floor of the inn.

Summer Girls
In 1914 Wilson A Finch and his wife Susan bought the house, turning it into '“The Canope Villa House” Summer Boarding - Free Boats! ' The Finches move in with their three daughters (Ava 23, Lena, 18 and Mildred 14), mother (Sarah 78), brother and sister-in-law, and their young son (Victor aged 7). The girls worked with their father and mother renting boats to row to the island. Marnie Streit has a photo of Lena Finch she found in the attic. The apparition of a young woman has been reported having tea downstairs, while a little boy sits by and older woman's bedside in the Nigerian room upstairs. A chair has been reported to mov one to the left of the bed. Could this be Victor and Sarah?

The Rooming House & Hattie Ash
At height of the Great Depression, The Finches sold the inn to the Heaths, restauranteurs from Binghampton, who supposedly used the property as an Ice House and a Rooming House. Then it was sold around 1934/1935 to poor Claude. B Pendleton, an electroplate technician turned farmer, who came into money and bought the property as his retirement. His wife, Hattie Ash lived up to her name and set the kitchen on fire, gutting it. Her mother W.A. Black (real name) moved in and poor Claude died in the house less than a year later at the age of 61.

Seeing Goats
Eventually the property was inherited from the Pendleton family to the Daniel Martin family. The property is passed off 3 more times and portions are sold to become part of the Southern Tier Expressway. then it passed to Marnie Streit, a school teacher with a passion for Fainting Goats, Great Pyrenees dogs and a pot belly pig
