ABOUT THE EMERY ESTATE

John & Mary King
The Emery Estate sits at the top of King's Oak Hill in what is now King Oak Park. John King and his wife Mary received the deed to the property in about 1636. The Kings came out on top with a land grant from Deputy Governor John Humphrey. Researchers have wondered aloud how these two managed to get their hands on such prime real estate. There is no record of a homestead. They owned Kings Oak Hill, at least long enough to name it, before it changed hands again and was bought/awarded to someone else. They also owned Kings Cove, which is now a park. John King was a former mariner. When he had the opportunity to go back to sea, he sold his holdings and left The Massachusetts Bay Colony.

The Whitmarsh Family
According to historians the second Colonial Era owners may be The Whitmarsh Family, who arrived in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in about 1635. They purchased/were awarded the property before 1644. John and Alice Whitmarsh had 7 children: Simon, who inherited the homestead, John, Nicholas, James, Jane, Onesephorus and Richard. There is no record of where their homestead was on the property. The land change hands two more times in the Colonial Era: William and Elizabeth Holbrook bought the property from the Whitmarsh, and Stephen French bought the property from them in 1670.

Revolutionary Soldiers & Abigail Adams
Though there is no evidence of consequential battles being fought on King's Oak Hill, the presence has been felt of Revolutionary Era soldiers. King's Oak Hill boasts an excellent view of Boston Harbor. Fun Fact: former First Lady Abigail Adams' childhood home sits at the foot of the hill, as does a cemetery.

George Washington Superfan
The Emery Estate was not built by the Emerys, though they were/are the most recent residents. This copy of Mount Vernon, designed by Alfred L. Darrow,, which also included a copy of George Washington's barn and carriage house, was built on King Oak Hill in 1903 by a strawboard (press board) magnate from Peoria, IL named William H. Binnian, who was a huge George Washington fan and had fallen in love with the Boston area.

The Emery Estate
The first inhabitants of the house were: William H. Binnian (Born January, 29 1857), wife, Elizabeth Babcock Binnian (Born 1861), son, Walter B. Binnian (Born 1885), Servant Gerda A. Johnson (Born 1889). Binnian listed his occupation as “Farmer” in 1910 and 1913. It was a working farm, after all. William and Elizabeth also became very active in local charities, hosting soldiers' families during WWI. Lizzie, who had travelled the world with William, became infirm and moved back to Boston a few years later. She died at their residence in Brookline in 1915. After her death Binnian sold the Estate to Allan C. Emery Sr. and his wife, Elsie, Allan C. Emery Sr. and his wife, Elsie in 1916. The Emery clan consisted of 5 kids and two servants, Katherine Kelly and Lillian Detorey.

The Patriarch
Allan C Emery Sr. actually lived at the estate the longest. He was a wool wholesaler, President of Evangelical Association, and part of an influential Boston Area family, originally from Newton. Allan C Emery Sr. lived at the estate until his death in 1952. When he passed, the estate was inherited by Allan Comstock Emery Jr. The senior Emery is said to watch over the property. Investigators feel him watching them in the downstairs "Prayer Room".

Allan C Emery Jr. and his wife lived happily in the house for many years. It became a "Secret Retreat" for Billy Graham. The City of Weymouth acquired the house and 24 acres remaining of the original farm in 2016
