ABOUT THE RANDOLPH COUNTY ASYLUM

The Poorhouse
Randolph County Asylum began as an Almshouse (also knwn as a “Poorhouse” ) and “Poor Farm” in 1851. The county purchased the land and built a wooden structure to care for those unable to work, including the mentally and physically disabled, single mothers, the elderly and orphans. The capacity at the time was 13 inmates. Residents were to maintain the farm, though many unable to perform labor due to age or infirmity. It was torn down and rebuilt in 1853 to house 16 people. It was destroyed by fire less than year later in January 1854.

Growing Population
A new two-story brick building constructed in 1855 but it was eventually demolished due to poor conditions. After 1856 a 4th incarnation was built to better accommodate growing population. The version of the 50,000 sq. ft. foot building you see today was built between 1898 and 1899. This infirmary/asylum contained six large wards, several private rooms, a laundry, a kitchen, and, eventually, separate dining rooms for women and men.

The Asylum & Infirmary
The expansive institution and working farm also included a pump house, stables, a hay barn, a machine shed, a "cell house", two garages, and a chicken coop on 350 acres. surrounded by a forest. There is also a cemetery also located on property about 230 yards northwest of the main building. hundreds of "inmates" passed through the Asylum & Infirmary. Some never left. At least 50 unmarked graves are thought to be on property.

S.T.O.P.
S.T.O.P. (Save The Old Properties) a non-profit organization, purchased the Randolph County Asylum in 2016 for its new life as paranormal attraction. It's been the focus of countless investigations and TV shows. No wonder, as the visitors have reported intense encounters including: the ghost of a woman in the basement, everyone's favorite cook in the kitchen, children in the rooms, an elemental in the men's dining hall, and feelings of terror in the attic.
